Every Breath You Take

People frequently1 use the term “Mother Nature” to describe the natural laws, that supposedly bring order and predictability to the world. However, Paul reminds us that Christ is ultimately the One who holds things together (Colossians 1:17), and not some impersonal force or random chance. We depend on Him for every breath draw. Since the first day of creation, He has been sustaining the world and providing for His creatures that inhabit it. (Nehemiah 9:6; Psalms 36:6, Hebrews 1:3).

That lends tremendous dignity to human labor, especially since God has placed humanity over the creation as His managers. He values work that seek to understand and oversee the world-for example, the work of a climatologist who studies the impact of humans on global ecology; the physicist who looks into the makeup of the atom and the application of that knowledge to human needs, and the publisher who helps distribute information and ideas to people. Jobs like these reflect God’s work as Creator, and those who do them are actually partners with Christ in maintaining His Creation.
