Our Brother’s Keeper- The Highest Fame
There are many grounds on which men may come to be remembered after the grave has closed on their coffins, their bodies committed back to the earth and their spirits returned to their Maker. A great picture, a captivating painting perhaps, an inspiring poem, a righteous or just law. These have perpetuated through the century and many of us can recall the name of an artist, poet or state leader- but fame of this kind is beyond the reach of most of us.
There are however honors that shine with an even brighter and more enduring luster. Honors which will lose none of their splendor when the art and literature of this world have perished, and when constitutions and laws, along with the nations they blessed, shall have dissolved forever. We can write our names on tablets more lasting than marble, – on the grateful memory of human hearts which shall bless us through eternity – for the consolation that we brought them when in their despair, they were ready to curse God and die. For the timely help which saved them not only from suffering, but from sin. In so doing, we would be fulfilling the purpose for which I believe we were primarily created- to be our brother’s keeper.
